Trends in the interlining industry.

Interlinings both non fusible and fusible continue to be an important component of garments. Their ability to give handle, shape, resilience, stiffness, improved fall etc to a garment makes them an invaluable tool. Being an integral component of most garments they are continuously evolving to meet changing needs of the garment industry. Their evolution is symbiotically linked to the changes in the garment industry itself. Some of the prominent ones are:

a. Special coatings on fabrics like silicone (for softness), Teflon (for stain resistance), nano particles make fusing with traditional interlinings difficult.

b. Garments are getting softer, lighter and more transparent interlinings have to follow this trend i.e. to be able to fuse without giving the garment a hard hand feel, ensure that the coatings do not strike thru ( i.e. come to the other side of the fabric), In sheer fabrics they blend well with the outer fabric and are not distinctly visible from the outside.

c. Heavy washes and garment dying finishes

To address the above three aspects the industry is evolving as follows:

1. special coating powders advanced chemical engineering of coating thermo plastic powders enable new generation interlinings to be able attach easily despite presence of coatings or the garment being exposed to heavy washes/finishes post production.

2. Double dot coating process which enables production of very light, soft interlinings which give good bonding results at the same time protects against strike back or strike thru,

3. Nano coating the newest and latest trend which is expected revolutionize the interlining biz. The concept being that by using very fine ground powders we are increasing its surface area and therefore its total area available to be bonded with the outer fabric. Thus an interlining evenly coated with a very powder (instead of it being in the shape of dots as is traditionally done) will lead to high bond strengths with less quantity of powders used. An important by product being eliminating strike thru and strike back problems and also giving a soft handle.

d. Garment fabrics are getting stretchy so interlinings are being made having similar stretch characteristics. Today you can even find stretch waist belts which when fused on a trouser waist belt allow the waist of a trouser to stretch to accommodate increase in size caused by a heavy meal or increase in waist size etc.

e. Seamless underwear are today being constructed by engineering the stretch properties of an elastic in the lingerie fabric itself. This is achieved by bonding the outer shell fabric with similar (in appearance) inner fabric. This is achieved by using avant grade double sided fusible interlinings or by transferring the thermo plastic dots onto the inner fabric itself before fusing the same to the outer shell fabric. Both imply a complete change in production process of the garment itself.

f. Eco friendly trend is being adopted by the use of recycled fibers in the base fabric, bio degradable polymers, use of naturally degradable fibers like viscose, bamboo, modal etc in the production of base fabrics.
